HOW MUCH GENESIS 950 SHOULD I USE? - SPOT CLEANING

GENERAL CLEANING WITH GENESIS 950

To use Genesis 950 as a general cleaner, it can be diluted with water at a ratio of 1 part Genesis 950 to 7 parts water. Genesis 950 is highly effective as an all purpose cleaner throughout the home. Clean kitchens, bathrooms and simple stains and spills. Being a Green cleaner, Genesis 950 is great for the kitchen as it will not leave behind residue or chemicals that could be harmful if they came in contact with food. Simply spray the stained area and allow the mixture to sit for a few moments to dissolve the stains. After a few minutes, wipe the area clean.

HEAVY CLEANING WITH GENESIS 950

When the stains are heavier, or more substantial in the composition, increase the amount of Genesis 950 by filling a spray bottle up 1/3 of the way with Genesis 950 and the remaining 2/3 with water. Spray the stains with the mixture ensuring the stained area is heavily saturated. With heavier stains, the mixture should also be given more time to soak into the stain. Allow the mixture to soak the stain for anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. After enough time has elapsed, wipe the stain up. If the stain is really heavy (paint, makeup, etc.), you may have to repeat the step, or work at lifting the edges of the stain to allow the mixture to seep under the stain as well as over it. In the event the stain has lightened, and not completely removed, allow the stain to dry completely. Once dry, repeat the process.

EXTREMELY HEAVY CLEANING WITH GENESIS 950

Some stains take a little more. In extreme cases, the ratio of Genesis 950 can be increased to a 50/50 mix with water. Use this option as a last resort only. Use this option only in the event that previous mixtures have not been effective. Typically, we advise people not to use this ratio because we want the product to last for you. We do not want people using a whole bottle of Genesis 950 on a stain that could have been removed with a lower ratio. Use this mix for really bad pet stains, extremely heavy build up or older stains. Prior to attempting to use a 50/50 mix, you can also pour a little Genesis 950 straight onto a stain AFTER you have tried removing the stain at a lower ratio. If for example you treated a stain as directed in the Heavy Cleaning procedure, and the stain is on the brink of being removed through that process, pour just a few drops straight onto the already wet stain and work the mixture into the already saturated stain with a towel or rag. Use this method sparingly.

REMOVE PET STAINS WITH GENESIS 950

One of the most popular reasons people use Genesis 950 is for pet stain removal. Genesis 950 is perfect for removing pet stains for a number of reasons. First, it is safe. There is no danger involved in using the products, nor will it harm your pet if they come in contact with it. Next, it does not discolor carpet or furniture. Another reason it is so popular is because it doesn't just remove the stains and odors, but in the process, it leaves your carpet smelling clean and feeling soft. In using Genesis 950 for pet stain removal and pet odor removal, it is VERY important that you use the product in accordance with what you are trying to clean. Pet stains and pet odors are two completely different things and they can NOT be treated the same way.

PET STAINS  - SPOT CLEANING SURFACE STAINS

When cleaning pet stains that are on the surface of carpet or upholstery, they can be treated by spot cleaning. Spot cleaning is only effective for surface stains. If you have pet odors, you will not be able to remove odor in the carpet by spot cleaning. Urine travels downward into the carpet and needs to be removed with a thorough cleaning using a machine. Spot cleaning is effective for removing visible surface stains. This same process can also be used for food and drink spills, makeup stains, paint stains and other visible stains on carpet, upholstery, clothing and rugs.




1. To remove stains using Genesis 950 as a spot cleaner, first locate the stain. In this example, a rust stain on carpet from a metal file cabinet is used.

2. Spray the stain with a mixture of Genesis 950 & water. In this example with mixture used is 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water.







3. Thoroughly saturate the area with the mixture and allow it to sit for a few moments. After the mixture has set into the stain, use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the area. The stain should break down easily. Pull up the debris from the stain with the cloth or sponge.






4. Once the stain has been removed, allow the area to dry. In the event any outlines of the stain still exist, try to rinse the area more, or allow to dry and repeat the process once the area is dry.

CARPET CLEANING MACHINE INSTRUCTIONS

There are several stains where spot cleaning might be ineffective and a carpet cleaning machine is needed. A perfect example of this is pet odor removal. Pet odor typically comes from a pet going to the bathroom on the carpet. As urine travels downward into the carpet, it can saturate the carpet fibers, and carpet padding easily absorbs the urine. Once urine has traveled below the carpet surface, spot cleaning becomes ineffective as this type of cleaning does not allow for the padding to become cleaned. Using a carpet cleaning machine allows the mixture of Genesis 950 to get into the padding, breakdown the odor causing bacteria and in turn flush it from the padding. If this is not done, the odor will remain. If untreated, this could result not just in a foul smell, but it could lead to mold and bacteria buildup. Further problems can result from your pet recognizing the odor and taking it as a cue to go to the bathroom in that spot again. Carpet cleaning with a machine is also the most effective way to clean carpet in instances where the spills are larger. In some instances, food, drinks, paint and makeup spills might need to be cleaned with a carpet cleaning machine depending on the size of the stain and how far they have spread. Tougher stains could also benefit from using the attachment hose of a carpet cleaning machine as it allows for increased water pressure, bristles that can agitate stains deep within the fibers or on furniture.

 There are two basic designs of carpet cleaning machines.

Machines With A Separate Compartment For Solution

Many household carpet cleaning machines have 3 compartments; one compartment for clean water,

one compartment for cleaning solution and one compartment for return water. These are the most self explanatory machines. Simply fill the water tank with water and the solution tank with Genesis 950. In most machines, the solution tank can be removed from the machine. The picture to the right is an example of the Bissell Pro Heat Cleaning Solution Tank. You do not have to dilute Genesis 950 when filling the solution tank in these machines as the machine does it for you. Generally, these machines have a dial setting with levels like "Medium," "Heavy" and "Rinse." These settings determine how much Genesis 950 and water are being mixed. For general carpeting cleaning, the medium setting is suitable. For pet stains, use the highest setting.

Machines With A Compartment For Solution And Water Combined

Other carpet cleaning machines, typically those that can be rented, have 2 tanks. One tank for a mixture of solution and water, the other tank for return water. In these tanks, Genesis 950 and water are mixed in the one tank. With these types of machines, you can fill them with the amount of solution relative to your cleaning task. The proportions used for spot cleaning can also be applied with these types of stains. If you are doing a general carpet cleaning, the ratio of 1 part Genesis 950 to 7 parts water is suitable. For pet odors, or heavy traffic areas, the ideal ratio is 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water. This will typically be the ratio you want to use and should be enough to perform most cleaning tasks. In extreme cases, the ratio of Genesis 950 to water can be a 50/50 mix. Again, this is for extreme situations.

How To Use Genesis 950 In A Carpet Cleaning Machine

To use Genesis 950 in any carpet cleaning cleaning, follow the instructions above as to how much solution to use in your carpet cleaning machine. Once you have filled your tank based on your cleaning need, go over the carpet nice and slow. Allow the mixture to saturate the carpet. Some machines will extract the mixture out of the carpet as you go over it. Other machines have a knob or lever that you engage to extract water. With machines that do extract as you go over the carpet, do not worry. Enough of the solution is still left behind that this is not an issue. There will still be enough mixture in the carpet even if your machine is extracting. After you have applied the mixture of solution and water on the carpet, allow it to sit. Typical 30 to 45 minutes is enough time for the solution to break down any debris or stains in the carpet. If you have severe stains, allow it to sit for a longer period of time. The longer the solution sits, the more it will break down. Some people will even allow it to sit overnight. If you choose to do this, do not allow the carpet to dry before rinsing. If you let the carpet dry before it is rinsed, everything that the solution has broken down will just settle right back into the carpet.

Once the allotted time has elapsed, fill your carpet cleaning machine tank with fresh water only. Machines with the compartment for solution will likely have a "Rinse" setting. If you select this setting, the machine will only tank water from the water tank.Slowly go over the entire carpet. This will flush out everything that the solution has broken down in the carpet. The first time you rinse, you may see the return water come back black. If you are seeing this, it is as a result of Genesis 950 not only breaking down the stains you were looking to remove, but also the breakdown of dirt, dust and debris within the carpet padding. Rinse repeatedly if this is the case. The clearer the return water, the cleaner the carpet. If you see a lot of foaming or soap suds, this is NOT Genesis 950. This is Genesis 950 breaking down and removing the residue left behind by soap based cleaners previously used in the carpet. Removing as much of this residue as possible will improve the texture of your carpet.

After you have rinsed the carpet, allow it to dry thoroughly. For faster drying results, use a fan or dehumidifier. Once dry, your carpet will not only be cleaner, but it will smell clean and it will also have a softer, more vibrant feel as any residue will have been removed.

Unlike other carpet cleaners, Genesis 950 is not soap based, therefore it will not leave a residue behind in your carpet, or clog stains into the fibers. Because it is sold as a concentrate, you add water to the machine based on your cleaning need. Several machines have two separate compartments . . . one for water and one for solution. Simply fill the solution tank with Genesis 950 and the water tank with water. The machine will then siphon the solution based on your setting. In machines where the water and solution are combined, you may choose how much Genesis 950 to use based on your cleaning task. Typically we recommend a mixture of 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water. However this can be increased as low as 1 part 950 to 7 parts water for a basic cleaning, or as high as a 50/50 mix for extreme stains. In the example to the right, an entire basement carpet was cleaned using Genesis 950 at the 1/3 to 2/3 ratio with water. The stains shown in the photo are years of pet stains. Both cats and dogs had made messes throughout the basement. In many cases, attempts to remove the stains with traditional cleaners failed. Rather than clean the stains, those products left behind a harsh gray stain. Using Genesis 950 in a carpet cleaning machine not only removed years of pet stains, but it also removed marks left behind from other cleaning products. Additionally, Genesis 950 removed the pet smell that lingered throughout the basement.

Clean hard to get areas such as stairs

Heavy traffic areas can also be cleaned using Genesis 950. Stairs can be one of the hardest areas to clean. Using a machine with an attachment hose can make it much easier to get into tight areas. In this photo, the stairs were a main traffic area. Too often, dust and dirt is left without being vacuumed, especially in areas that make cleaning difficult. As the traffic increases, the dirt and dust become matted into the carpet fibers as they settle. With a good cleaning, Genesis 950 can easily break those stains down and flush them from the surface.  

Traditional soap based cleaners can make stains like these worse by trapping the dirt and dust into the fibers of the carpet. Soap can also settle into the carpet bringing the stains with it. This is often the cause of stains "reappearing" after they have been cleaned. Soap will take the stains into the padding, and then as humidity levels changes, the stains can rise to the surface.

Common household carpet cleaning machines look similar to an upright vacuum cleaner. Typically, these machines have 2 compartments for cleaning. One compartment is for clean water and the other compartment for solution. These machines pull fluid from both the water and solution compartment at the same time. A dial on the machine determines how much solution will be used. With these machines, simply select the setting based on your cleaning need. For a general cleaning, select "Low." For heavy traffic or pet stains, select "High." The machine mixes the solution and water for you.

Other machines, typically rental type carpet cleaner

machines or more industrial machines have one large tank where the water and solution are mixed together. With these tanks, the user has a greater ability to use exactly how much they would like. With these machine types, fill the machine up based on your cleaning need.  If you are performing a general carpet cleaning, use 1 part Genesis 950 to 7 parts water. For pet stains and food stains, a 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water mix can be used. If the carpet is obnoxious and filthy or the odors are overwhelming, you can go as high as a 50/50 mix.

Once you have your machine filled accordingly, begin cleaning by slowly going over the carpet. Begin cleaning by slowly going over the carpet. Allow the mixture of solution and water to thoroughly saturate the carpet. After the carpet has been thoroughly cleaned, allow it to sit.

Common Carpet Cleaning Questions

What temperature water should I use?
Lukewarm water is recommended, although cold water will work as well. DO NOT use hot water. Hot water may cause the adhesive holding your carpet in place to melt.

What if my machine sucks up the solution as it cleans?

This is not a problem as these machines leave enough solution behind that it will still work to break down carpet stains and odors. 

As the solution sits in the carpet it will work to break down dirt, dust, grime, dander and stains. It will also work to break down any soap based residue left behind by cleaning products that have been used in the past. Like the cleaning ratios, the time left to sit will vary based on what you are cleaning. For a general cleaning, you can even start rinsing right away. The worse the stains are, the longer the solution should sit. For pet stains, we recommend 45 minutes to an hour. In some cases customers have let it sit overnight. As you begin to use the product, you will become better at understanding how it works.

Once the time has elapsed, fill your carpet cleaning machine up with ONLY fresh water. If your machine is the type with 2 compartments, these machines generally have a "Rinse" cycle and will only draw fluid from the water tank. If your machine has 1 tank, simply fill that tank with water. 

Slowly go over the carpet with your machine. You will see the return water come back black or murky. Continue to rinse until the water comes back clear. In cases where you see a lot of suds or foaming, this is not from the Genesis 950, but rather from the breakdown of residue left behind from past cleaners. If your carpet has not been cleaned for sometime, you may have to go over some areas several times to get the water to come back clear.

After you have rinsed the carpet, it is important to allow the carpet to dry. While excess moisture in the padding may promote bacteria or mold growth, the Genesis 950 fights that with it's antibacterial agents and actually prevents such growth. However, thoroughly drying the carpet is recommended. If weather permits and humidity levels are low, open windows to help the process. Fans and dehumidifiers can also be used to speed up the drying process.

Remove Pet Stains With Genesis 950

The same carpet cleaning guidelines listed above can be used to remove pet stains. Genesis 950 is the best pet stain remover for everything from pet stains on furniture to pet odors in carpet. There are countless products on the market for pet stain removal, however anyone with a pet probably has a whole cabinet of things they tried but had no luck with. Save your money and use a cleaner that works! However be weary of saving all your money. There are several DIY pet stain remover recipes online and unfortunately, they include several household items you should NEVER use in your carpet.

• Vinegar & ammonia - Hands down the WORST things you can use to clean pet stains. People who want a green pet stain remover tend to lean towards homemade recipes featuring these items. They are inexpensive, and typically easy to find in the home. However, the acidic
  
  properties have some of the same elements found in the acidic base of urine. This causes a problem because the odor released from vinegar & ammonia have of the same properties found in urine. Animals urinate in areas where they smell urine. Take note when your dog sniffs out a spot, or your cat is drawn to the litter box. This is not from training, this is from instinct. , Ammonia and/or vinegar can serve as an open invitation for your pet to sniff out the spot where you cleaned with either of the products. Once that spot has been found, your pet will likely go there deliberately. Pet owners who use either of these often find themselves confused and perplexed when their pet keeps going in the same spot no matter how many times they clean the area. They go in that spot because the odor of the vinegar and ammonia do not remove the urine odor. Instead, vinegar and ammonia enhance the area and your pet will keep going there until it has been thoroughly cleaned from the carpet. 

• Enzymes - Enzymes line the aisles of pet stores. They are often hailed as the go to miracle cleaner for pet stains. This couldn't be further from the truth. Enzymes work on a principal that when two specific substances come in contact with each other, there will be a natural reaction in which one breaks the other down. It sounds simple enough, release the enzymes into the urine and they break down naturally. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Enzymes are very complex. It takes specific factors to make an enzyme work. The process is often explained in comparison to using a lock and key. There can be a thousand keys and one lock. For the lock to be activated, the correct key needs to be used. All the other keys can be put to the lock, but if there is not a 100% match,there will be no reaction. Enzymes can only break down an element if they have the biological capacity to do so. The DNA strands have to be a 100% match. In addition to the DNA matching, there are other factors in play: temperature, moisture, age and so on. If any of these factors are off, the enzyme can not work. To complicate the process even more, enzymes sold are sold in general mass production. They are not designed to react specifically to the pH levels of individual pet's urine, variables in pet's diets, health issues and other details that vary from one animal to another. One of the most common complaints about enzymes is that the stain typically reappears a few days later or the odor returns. This happens because enzymes do not have the strength to get deep into the padding. So, while the stain on the carpet may be removed, what is left behind below the surface can rise to become visible as temperature changes. They also can not kill the bacteria which creates the odor. Without proper deodorizing, the odor returns. 

• Household Cleaners - Another common ingredient in DIY Pet Stain removers are soap based items such as dishwashing detergent. While these type of cleaners
  
  perform well when removing stains from hard surfaces, they are not designed for carpet. They might lift light food or drink stains, but they do not have the power to properly clean pet stains. With pet odors, the issue comes from urine below the surface. Cleaning with a soap based cleaner does not remove odor from the padding. Soap used on the surface of carpet actually attracts dirt rather than break it down. In instances where a stain is "cleaned" but reappears a few days later, it is likely that a soap based cleaner had been used and the residue left behind pulls dirt to it over the course of a few days.

• Oxidizing Cleaners - These cleaners work using a process called oxidization. Many of them use Nirtic Acid (which is in fertilizer - do you really want that in your carpet?) to remove electrons in an effort to displace a stain. It's a little more of a complex process. The process used is not natural and very chemical based. Because of this type of cleaner is the most likely to damage carpet. Discoloration of carpet is a common effect when using oxidizing cleaners. The chemistry in the oxidizer can react to the carpet and turn it various colors. If after cleaning there is a pink or orange tint to the carpet, it is from oxidation. This type of discoloration can NOT be reversed.

This mixing ratio is perfect for all your general cleaning needs. If you have heavier stains, you can increase the ratio as high as a 50/50 mix. The uses for Genesis 950 in the bathroom have no limit. It is safe for all surfaces. Easily clean ceramic, tile, grout, granite, marble, finished wood, chrome and more. One of the most challenging cleaning tasks in the bathroom can be the fixtures. Water stains, dirt buildup and mildew can make chrome and other fixtures look dingy and unsightly. At the 1/3 950 to 2/3 water, Genesis 950 can easily remove these stains without using a whole bottle! How many times have you cleaned the bathroom with a typical household cleaner and ended up with an empty bottle spitting out foam? With those cleaners, it seems more of the stains are removed by scrubbing than they are by the actual product. 

Cleaning Bathroom Fixtures With Genesis 950

Shower heads are impacted by gallons of water running through them everyday. As a result, water can leave stains on the fixture making it look unsightly. In addition to stains from hardening water, mildew and mold can also build up on the fixture. This buildup can also occur inside the fixture. If shower heads are not cleaned on a regular basis, the bacteria and fungus breeding within the fixture can cause serious health issues. While cleaning the outside of shower fixtures can improve the aesthetics, cleaning the inside is much more important, and far too often overlooked.

A closer look at the fixture reveals water spots on the chrome. Surrounding the openings where the water comes from, pink / orange mold can be seen forming. This mold is also visible on the bottom of the fixture. Typically, this mold wipes off fairly easily, however the real issue is not so much the visible mold on the outside, but the real concern is what might be on the inside of the fixture.

Remove the shower head from the wall. This is fairly simple and usually the shower fixture can twist right off. Using Genesis 950 at a mixture of 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water, clean the unit. This can be done by spraying the mixture on the fixture or by pouring it on the fixture. Also be sure to actually pour the cleaner into the fixture so that any bacteria and mold inside can be broken down.

Using a bristle based brush, or a textured sponge or cloth, scrub the fixture. Typically, the pink / orange mildew should come off fairly easy. The water staining on the chrome may take a little elbow grease. If you have the ability to actually soak the shower head in a 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water mixture for about 5 to 10 minutes, this would make the stain removal even easier as the cleaner will be able to be absorbed by the water stains and break down with greater ease.


Scrubbing the fixture as shown in this example may take a little more scrubbing because the slant of the fixture does not easily allow the cleaning mixture to build up on the shower head. As you are scrubbing, spraying on or applying more of the mixture as you clean will help make the process easier.

After you have scrubbed the shower head clean and ran the solution through the shower head, rinse thoroughly. Be sure to flush the cleaning solution out of the inside before showering.


Another positive outcome with Genesis 950 is that it is green. Being an environmentally friendly cleaner, you are not releasing hazardous chemicals down the drain and into the watershed. You are also not leaving being hazardous residue in the bathroom which can cause health issues.

Sink fixtures can also become prone to water buildup and mildew growth. Not only is the buildup on faucets clearly visible, it is also unsanitary. Toothbrush splatter can collect on the fixture, as well as splatter from the mouth of the person brushing their teeth. Let's not forget that the sink is used after going to the bathroom. We'll just leave it at that! So in addition to water buildup and mildew, there are germs and bacteria ALL over the sink! Cleaning doesn't not just make the bathroom look more inviting, but it also prevents the spread of germs, illness and disease.

The easiest way to clean the faucet fixtures is by simply pouring a mixture of 1/3 Genesis 950 and 2/3 water into the sink. You can also spray the mixture onto the fixture, however it typically runs right off the fixture due to the slants, slopes and curves.

Cleaning with Genesis 950 in the bathroom is so easy! Simply moisten a cloth with the mixture in the sink and begin to wipe. The mixture of Genesis 950 and water will begin to break down stains as you wipe. In most cases, the mixture will make it easy to remove hard to reach stains such as those between faucet handles and the base, or buildup between where the chrome meets the ceramic.

         

Remove hard to clean areas such as those under faucet "lids" by removing the lid and wiping down the area.

Easily clean grime and buildup where the chrome and porcelain come together. Simply spray the area with a mixture of 1/3 Genesis 950 and 2/3 water, allow it to sit for a few moments to break down the buildup, then wipe away the broken down stains. When cleaning with traditional cleaners, these areas can cause some difficulty as scrubbing in such a narrow area can be impossible. With Genesis 950, the buildup actually breaks down with little effort required on your part.
