How To Remove Pasta Stains

Pasta stains can be one of the toughest types of stains to remove. Tomato based sauces can leave bold stains on carpet, cloth and upholstery. However these stains do not have to be challenging. If properly cleaned, they can be removed with ease. 

This photo was taken after the stain was attempted to be cleaned with just water. As you can see, the stain was pushed further into the carpet only making the stain worse.

In this example, an entire bowl of ravioli was spilled on a brand new carpet. 

For our cleaning example, we used Genesis 950 in a Bissell Spotbot. The Spotbot is an easy to use, compact carpet cleaner. It has a compartment where water is added and cleaning solution is added. The compartment has a fill line showing where to fill with water and where to fill with solution. However for our stain, we disregarded the fill lines and used a 50/50 mix of water and Genesis 950. We then allowed the water to preheat. Using the hose attachment, we cleaned the stained area.


Repeated strokes over the area showed improvement to the carpeting and the stain began to lift.









At a certain point, the stain started showing signs of removal, however the tomato sauce was trapped inside of many of the carpet fibers and the hose began to slow down as far as what it was removing. At this time, we used a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of Genesis 950 and water and simply sprayed the area. After spraying the area with this mixture, the stain was left alone for about 10 minutes. This allowed the Genesis 950 to work its way into the fibers and break down the stain. Unlike other cleaners, Genesis 950 is a surfactant based cleaner. It is designed to work with water to be absorbed into the stain and actually break the bonds of the stain. After the stain was left to sit, we used the actual machine on the spot. Using a heavy setting, we simply set the SpotBot on top of the stain and let it gently brush the stained area. The SpotBot has settings that allow it to be left on a spot. It will release the mixture of solution and water into the stained area, gently scrub the area, then extract the area.









As you can see, the Genesis 950 broke the stain apart and the SpotBot extracted everything the Genesis 950 was able to remove.




Once the stain was lifted, we again used the hose attachment with ONLY water in the the compartment to flush and extract any residue left in the carpet. After doing this, we used the attachment hose but dispensed neither water or solution and just extracted any water and moisture from the carpet. The hose attachment also allowed us to even out the carpet. By the time the cleaning was completed, the carpet once again looked like new!

Visible stains on your carpet from pets can be a much easier fix then resolving odor issues in your carpet. While visible stains can be easily targeted and treated, odors coming from the carpet may require some finesse. Generally, pet odors can be easily removed with Genesis 950 Concentrate if properly used in a steam cleaner.

Genesis 950 is an all purpose cleaner that works with water to break the bonds of stains and lift them from the surface. In doing so, it kills mold and bacteria, which in turn deodorizes the area being cleaned and removes the smell. When odors are present as a result of pet stains, it is very important that the carpet is cleaned thoroughly. While spot cleaning can be helpful in removing the visible stains, this type of cleaning will not prevent odor issues.

To properly remove odors from carpet, it is essential that the carpet is thoroughly cleaned, preferably using a steam cleaner or carpet shampoo machine. Only this type of cleaning will ensure that you are cleaning deep within the carpet. It is also crucial you use an effective cleaner. What makes Genesis 950 effective for this type of cleaning is the fact that it will kill mold and bacteria. If you are releasing too much water into your carpet without such protection, the moisture from the water may promote mold or mildew. This in turn would make odor problems more significant. The use of Genesis 950 prevents such growth.

If you have properly cleaned your carpets, but still smell foul odors, there might be some other factors to consider. First, the sub-floor. The sub-floor is the area under the carpeting and padding. Most often, the sub-floor is made of a plywood or similar type material. Because plywood is so porous, it can absorb anything that has seeped through the carpet and the padding. While odors can be easily removed from carpet and padding with Genesis 950, a plywood sub-floor is much harder to lift odors from. When the sub-floor is impacted in such a manner, the only way to really effectively treat it is by removing the carpet and either replacing the sub-floor or treating it with products designed specifically to treat sub-floors. Both of these options can actually be done without replacing the carpet. Another possible odor source involving the sub-floor may come from rotting wood. If a portion of the sub-floor has retained too much moisture, it can begin to deteriorate. The smell of a rotting sub-floor can be quite prominent and needs more attention then a simple carpet cleaning.

Mold and mildew can also be a culprit for odors that Genesis 950 can not remove. While Genesis 950 will kill mold and bacteria, it will not remove growth that has been there. It certainly can kill it or prevent it from spreading, however once it is there, even if it has been killed, it needs to be removed. If it is not removed, the smell can still linger. Generally this type of situation occurs in the padding portion of the carpeting. This can be resolved by lifting the carpet and replacing the padding, as well as properly cleaning and sealing the sub-floor.

Finally, moisture in general can create odors that seem to stem from the carpet. If there is a musty smell, this may be simply from too much moisture in the carpet. When carpet cleaning with a machine, always be sure to extract as much water as you can after rinsing. Most machines allow you to extract water from carpet without putting more down as you are doing so. Take the time to extract everything you can. If possible, open windows when you clean to allow moisture to evaporate. If fans are available, use them to help dry the cleaned area. Avoid extra traffic on a damp carpet. Dehumidifiers are also excellent in removing extra moisture from carpets.

When used properly, Genesis 950 will deodorize and remove pet odors from carpet. If you are facing any issues with odors not being removed after Genesis 950 has been used, it is not that Genesis 950 did not work, but rather that there is a bigger problem under the surface. To remove pet odor from carpet, Genesis 950 should be used in a carpet cleaning machine.
